The Sydney Swans are about to announce a contract extension for young forward Logan McDonald, according to 7NEWS Perth’s Ryan Daniels.

The AFL the Premier League favorites have enjoyed a stellar 11-1 start to the season boosted by key re-signings.

Will Hayward signed a five-year deal last week to join Errol Gouldon and James Rowbotham in making long-term commitments so far this season.

McDonald attracted the inevitable interest from Fremantle and the West Coast that comes with being a talented young gun originally from Western Australia.

But he recently made it clear he hopes to stay in Sydney and the Swans could now unveil his new deal in a matter of days.

“There’s been a lot of talk about Logan McDonald over the last few years,” Daniels said on Triple M.

“Will he go back to Fremantle, will he possibly even go to the West Coast? Will he stay in Sydney?

“I believe the announcement that he will stay in Sydney is inevitable.

“I think we might even see it this week.”

MacDonald played just seven games in his debut season in 2021, but has since flourished, playing 17 the following year before being a major omission for the grand final.

He scored 32 goals in 20 games last year and is even stronger so far in 2024.

The 22-year-old has 19 goals from 12 games so far, and on the only two occasions he has kept a clean sheet, he has still contributed three direct assists.

Sydney, meanwhile, are just one win away from matching last year’s total of 12.

But coach John Longmire says they still have work to do to prove their premiership credentials.

The league leaders were held scoreless in the first quarter against Geelong the Sunday before five unanswered in the second term started a huge turnaround.

From 29 points down, Sydney were within one goal at half-time and ahead late in the third quarter, eventually running out 30-point winners.

“You can’t flirt when you’re playing well,” Longmire said.

“We still have some work to do at the beginning. We certainly exposed ourselves.

“We saw what happened in the first quarter against a good team when you just take the pressure off a little bit.

“We don’t want to be just people who rely on talent.

“When we work hard and apply pressure, our talent can shine through. The other way around doesn’t work.”
