Ex-cop fails to face court after allegedly lying in NRL star’s rape trial

A former NSW police officer has been charged with lying to a court about the content of text messages during the sexual assault trial of NRL star Jack de Belin.
Prosecutors say Adams, the lead detective in the sexual assault case, lied about what he found in text messages between de Belin and a contact saved as “Attorney Craig” contained on a Nokia cellphone.
He is alleged to have lied by telling the court the texts only related to the Dragons’ club business.
At the time, de Belin and Sinclair were facing charges of raping a 19-year-old woman at a North Wollongong unit in December 2018.
Adams did not appear when his case was heard in Wollongong Local Court today as bail conditions were requested by prosecutors.
His attorney argued the former officer was not a flight risk.
Magistrate Claire Girotto said conditions should be imposed to reduce the chance of Adams absconding due to the nature of the charges.
“These are very serious allegations,” she said.
“To be sure, there should be something to mitigate the risk of escape.”
Adams’ lawyer agreed to the terms, including that he continue to live at his address in Wilton, south-west of Sydney.
The case is due back in court on August 21 for proof of the charge.
