An onlooker told the moment he stepped in to help in dramatic scenes, saying he would have been in “big trouble” without his MMA training.
Adam Morton, 39, was rushed to Sunshine Coast University Hospital where he remained this evening in a critical condition.
Police believe the assailant fled the scene.
“These were seemingly random attacks on these two victims and do not appear to have been provoked at this stage,” Senior Sergeant Craig Mansfield told reporters today.
“We are concerned. He appeared to be under the influence of some substances and behaved quite erratically on stage.
“He has attacked two people randomly, so he is potentially dangerous to approach.”
Video obtained by 9News shows bystander James William trying to restrain the attacker.
But the younger man eventually slipped away and police believe the coward punched Morton moments later before stomping on him as he lay on the ground.
William said he intervened to try to protect those around him.
“He was going crazy and it was like if I didn’t know any jiu-jitsu I was going to be in big trouble,” he told 9News.
William was also taken to hospital after having his tooth knocked out during the ordeal.
“He went for some wretch, the king hit him, and before I could turn around and get there, he’d already been stomped on the head probably about 10 times,” William said.
Mansfield said there were no weapons involved.
“We will allege that the 39-year-old victim was trampled,” he said.
“He appeared to be unconscious on the ground and then proceeded to kick him in the head and back.
“It was a brutal attack.
Police described the third man as Caucasian in appearance, aged in his 20s and 175 centimeters tall.
He was wearing a gray sweater, dark shorts and thongs.
Police have appealed for anyone who saw or filmed the fight to come forward.
