The Lib Dems’ surprising strategy to breach the blue wall – podcast | News

[ad_1]

At the start of the 2024 election campaign, the Liberal Democrat strategy seemed to involve a lot of Ed Davey performing eye-catching stunts, from paddle boarding to traversing water obstacle courses. Then came a heartfelt video about the leader’s life as a carer, first for his parents and then for his young son, highlighting the Lib Dems’ welfare policies. But while those moments may have rubbed off on voters, the party is also relying on something else to bolster its chances: tactical voting.

The Guardian’s Senior Political Correspondent, Peter Walker, went on the election campaign with the party. He was struck by how disenchantment with the Tories was being weaponized to encourage voters who might prefer another party to vote for the Lib Dems as a more reliable way of protecting Tory MPs.

Michael Safi hears how tactical voting could be growing in popularity, what its benefits and risks could be and why it could help the Lib Dems and Green Party – but not Reform UK – win more seats.
